Chapter 21

“I’ve known Rocky and Mitch since they were kids,” Dolan said. “And both are about as useless as tits on a boar. I have no doubt that they would shoot a deer out of season. But burglary and arson? I just don’t see it.”

“I’ve got a call in to Mark Santos over in Pinetop,” Weber said. “The deer comes under Game and Fish’s jurisdiction, so I’ll see what he says about that. Meanwhile, I’m going to drive over and have a talk with Max Woodbury about that fight Sharleen told me about. I’m wondering why he never mentioned that to us.”

Chad hung up the telephone and said, “According to Mrs. Fetter, who owns the cabin, they didn’t have any firearms, and nothing else of real value was in the cabin except the car they left up here to use when they spend time here. Otherwise, just some furniture, a small TV, pots and pans, that sort of thing.”

“I remember seeing what was left of the TV,” Weber said. “I really don’t think there’s anything to the story except a wife that’s fed up and wants to make life hard for her husband and his brother. But I’m going to go over and talk to Max, see what he has to say about the fight. We don’t have anything else to go on at this point, do we?”

“Not really,” Chad said. “C.C. went back to Phoenix this afternoon to take care of some stuff at home and said she’d be back Monday. Or sooner if anything else pops up.”

“Or burns down,” Weber said dryly as he headed for the door.

Max Woodbury was cutting lengths of heavy black PVC pipe when Weber pulled into his driveway and got out of the Explorer.

“Afternoon, Jimmy. Did you come by to tell me you caught that firebug, or do you need to borrow a plunger?”

He laughed at his own joke and Weber gave an obligatory chuckle.

“Neither, Max. But I need to talk to you if you’ve got a minute.”

“Sure,” Max said, setting his saw down. “What’s on your mind?”

“Last week when I was out here after the fire, I asked if you knew anybody who might be mad at you or be holding a grudge.”

“Yeah, and I told you. Not anybody that I know of.”

“What about Mitchell Collins?”

“Mitch? What about him?”

“Somebody said you two had a big fight a while back. What was that about?”

“A fight? Me and Mitch?” Max looked perplexed, then suddenly laughed and asked, “Who told you that bullshit?”

“Did you guys get into a fight?”

“No! Not really. More of a shoving match than anything else.”

“What happened?”

“We was playing pool at the Tap Room and Mitch had that girlfriend of his with him. What’s her name? Linda? No Lynette, that’s it. She wanted to play too, and she was wearing one of them blouses with a loose top and no bra, and every time she bent over to take a shot I could see everything she had. And I’m here to tell ya’ Jimmy, that old gal bent over a lot, if you get my drift.
